The trail is actually on a boardwalk to protect the alpine vegetation – so stay on the boardwalk. There are a couple of pathways, but the trail to the Hidden Lake Overlook is pretty obvious. The trail starts from the top of Logan Pass at the Visitor’s Center which is always very busy. He stood there for a while surveying his vast kingdom.The Hidden Lake Overlook trail located in Glacier National Park is a great family-friendly hike. He had a very ‘I’m better than you’ attitude as he made his way to the top of the ridge. One of them continued walking up the side of the mountain stopping along the way to stare back at us. A small group of us gradually started walking, keeping an eye on the sheep the entire time. This is where I got a little nervous as we needed to continue on the trail, but there were big horn sheep on each side. Three of them crossed the trail into the wooded area on the other side of the trail. They began moving so we all waited to see which way they would go. All of us stood there taking pictures and not wanting to scare them or get too close. Then, we found more people frozen in place and eventually saw five big horn sheep in the woods right off of the trail. We snagged some pictures and continued on our way. Sure enough, there were more mountain goats right off of the trail. Once it leveled out, we immediately saw people stopped which is usually a good sign of some type of wildlife being around. Once we got up the snowy hills, the trail leveled out. We tried to hurriedly get thru the snow so we could get some pictures of them, but they moved on before we were able to get there. While trying to navigate the snow and not fall, we could see some big horn sheep up in the distance. The trail to Hidden Lake was closed due to bear activity so I am glad we weren’t doing that hike! You always want to check the trail status before heading out for the day or you may end up disappointed. On our visit, the Highline Trail as well as the actual trail to Hidden Lake were both closed. This information board lists trails that are closed and precautions to take. I would recommend reading the trail info for any of the surrounding trails you plan on hiking. The visitor’s center posts trail information and they did inform of the need for proper footwear due to the snow on the trail. It made it a bit treacherous to navigate so make sure to have proper footwear. It was quite icy from being walked on so much. There was a stark contrast in seeing the spring flowers in bloom and there still being snow on the ground in the near distance.Įven in July, there was still snow covering parts of the trail. Having visited in July, beautiful yellow flowers covered the meadow. The trail starts as a paved pathway and then leads onto a boardwalk over a vast meadow. It is a great trail for families, even those with younger children. Due to this short length and it being a less difficult hike, the trail can be somewhat crowded. The Hanging Garden Trail begins behind the Visitor’s Center and is a three mile round trip hike. There are bathrooms here, station to fill your water bottle, a gift shop and rangers to answer questions you may have.

Park rangers will not allow cars to pull in when it is full so make sure you have a back up plan in case it’s full when you arrive! Both times we visited were in the late afternoon and we had no problem finding parking.
It also is the parking lot for the start of a very popular hike called The Highline Trail. It is where the Continental Divide is located as well as the sign that commemorates that. There is a large parking lot here, but it tends to fill up quickly in the mornings. The visitor’s center is about 32 miles from the West Glacier Entrance. The trail begins at the Logan Pass visitor’s center which is on the Going-to-the-Sun Road. Anyone who has a chance to visit Glacier National Park in Montana should add this trail to their list of must dos. If you want to know what my favorite trail was, you can read about that here.
